Welcome to the journey of the homemaker, where multitasking is redeemed and the intelligent wisdom of being present (and needed) in one’s home (and on one’s property, if you have chosen to embrace land and its denizens) — is recognized!
By the way, I went digging because I was confident that C. S. Lewis would never have referred to homemaking as a “career.”
The language seemed wrong, and as it turns out, my instinct was correct.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the actual source of this quote that has been paraphrased and had modern language added to it.
The meaning remains quite similar, but this is more enjoyable to read because it appears to be what CS Lewis actually wrote! As he was a phenomenal author, I see no reason for us to be altering or changing his words.
What follows is from a letter Lewis wrote to Mrs. Johnson on March 16, 1955:
