Friends don't cancel Friends, do they?

Monday, June 30th, 2025

Reflections on cancel culture at the personal friendship level, and thoughts about how to do better.

Living in a midnight blue echo chamber means that after years or even decades of friendship, the changing of one's opinion can result in abrupt isolation as once considered staunch and true friends can discover they struggle to maintain said friendships with people who are different from themselves.

As a person who draws a hard line very rarely, and who grew up with the American ideal that diversity is inherent to the greatness of our constitution, national morals, and the mythology of our country (which includes our goals and wishes for the future) — I am deeply troubled and caught off guard by the interpersonal act of cutting someone off because they don't hold the same opinion you do.

Details are in the video, and if you have lost relationships over the past 10 years or specifically over the past six years during the global Covid debacle, you're not alone — AND we need to find a better way.

If you've had success at mending relationships, or if you have a reason why you maintain relationships with people who differ from you, feel free to share below!
