I am grateful to human organizational skills. In fact, that was going to be today’s primary focus of appreciation and gratitude. However, I need to go sideways a bit, because “human organizations” are not all created equal. Some are evil.
Secular cultures tend to veer away from the term “evil.” It is seen as a religious concept, imbued with demonic or God versus Satan symbolism. In truth, there is little to suggest this in the etymology of the word, and here is the full and complete definition as offered by The American Heritage Dictionary, 5th Edition:
evil /ē′vəl/
adjective
Morally bad or wrong; wicked.
"an evil tyrant."
Causing ruin, injury, or pain; harmful.
"the evil effects of a poor diet."
Characterized by or indicating future misfortune; ominous.
"evil omens."
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s take a moment to consider what happened to Israel (and the world) on October 7th. In short, people who wanted to cause ruin, injury and pain to a chosen enemy behaved in morally bad, wrong, and wicked ways in order to fulfill the ominous warnings of the past by making misfortune a present reality.
In other words: October 7th was a day of Evil Incarnate.
Yet, somehow — this (and the ongoing torture of child hostages, rapes of female hostages, beatings of adult male hostages, denial of medication for elderly hostages, and crude medical treatment of some injuries without pain killers, along with long-term, slow starvation and endless terror) EVIL is being entirely ignored by a frightening number of impressionable, deeply inexperienced and foolishly overconfident young people. With predictable results. So, where does this leave us?
GRATEFUL.
How do we know when our body is sick? We must have symptoms. The difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic is the difference between inserting a stent into a blocked artery or dying of a massive heart attack. The same can be said of societal illness and disease. Like, anti-semitism.
Prior to October 7th, I thought anti-semitism was in a death spiral, becoming more and more rare with each passing generation. I’m fifty-one years old. I grew up hearing my grandfather’s stories from his years as a P.O.W. in Germany. The Diary of Anne Frank was required reading when I was in high school, along with One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, To Kill a Mockingbird, and 1984 by George Orwell. In my college years and as I became a mother, Schindler’s List, Sophie’s Choice, and Life is Beautiful served as compelling reminders of what happens when antisemitic attitudes are stoked and fed into murderous, blazing fires of hatred and intolerance.
NOTE: The rioting Gazan Civilians who followed their Hamas Government-trained terrorist fighters into Israel, constitute a Pogrom, as their purpose and goal was to KILL, RAPE, AND KIDNAP JEWS. END BLOODLINES. MASSACRE BABIES AND TODDLERS JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE JEWISH. IN FRONT OF THEIR PARENTS. SLAUGHTER PREGNANT WOMEN. AND, TERRORIZE EVERY JEWISH PERSON’S FRIEND OR FAMILY MEMBERS BY FILMING AND UPLOADING/LIVESTREAMING VIDEOS OF THEIR TORMENT AND DEATHS.
Prior to October 7th, I’d begun to feel that antisemitism was “old hat.” While the topic needed to be revisited, for each new generation, it almost felt like we were “beating a dead horse.” I mean, who didn’t understand how terrible the Nazi regime was? How horrifying the pograms? Surely, only poorly raised, ignorant, racist victims of terrible upbringings were cursed with antisemitic attitudes. Right?
Wrong, March. Very, very wrong.
And, while the events of October 7th could never be construed to be anything other than utterly horrific, immoral, grotesque, deplorably wrong, utterly unjustified and 100% criminal, I am extremely grateful (on a daily basis) for the education I have received since that terrible day.
My eyes are opened. I see the sickness that has been spreading across the globe, fed by handouts and charitable aid given carelessly to a terrorist organization that oppresses and silences any and all moderately-opinioned Palestinians. Peace with Israel — in the eyes of Hamas — is essentially haram. *Haram is an Arabic word that means forbidden by Islamic law. It can be used to describe foods, actions, or things that are not allowed by the religion.
I am honestly filled with gratitude for my brilliant fellow humans who have opened my eyes. Educated me. Raised my awareness. Spoken truth to brutality. Muslim Israelis who have staunchly defended their homeland, strongly condemning accusations of Israel being an apartheid state. And the many people who have offered something as simple as pure logic! For example, Israel hosts one of the largest, annual Pride Festivals in the world. Meanwhile, Gazans throw homosexuals off their rooftops, after castrating them and dragging them through town. And we’ve got this happening?
I especially appreciate various Muslim influencers, Hamas defectors, and other middle eastern experts (who are actually middle eastern) who have spoken publicly about the reasons why the surrounding Muslim nations refuse to allow Palestinians into their countries. The culture, habits and goals of the self-identified “Palestinian People” is not one of peaceful coexistence. Palestinians have had, for a long time, the power to bring Peace (or continued conflict) to the Middle East.
Many, many thanks to all who have taken to social media or allowed themselves to be interviewed, as they stood strong and brave against a veritable tsunami of antisemitism unleashed upon the world by (1) cowardly leaders who remain silent, and (2) those leading impulsive masses of gullible and impulsive youths (in particular) who have nothing better to do than stupidly participate in what appears to be a globally organized psychological war against peaceful people.
You could not be less like Martin Luther King Jr. or Gandhi or any other great and peaceful leader than these self-centered pockets of Palestinians/Sympathizers who are intentionally traumatizing everyone in their path. They demonstrate a total lack of discipline or self-respect, while expressing a grotesque lust for power over others, an ugly desire for revenge, a willingness to cause unfettered hurt to innocent victims (an extension of the October 7th attacks), a preference for using profane language and intense aggression toward bystanders, a sheer lack of empathy, an appetite for glorified hatred, and a will to commit ongoing community terrorism.
To see this, up front and personal, clear as day, is a gift. Because now, we know what we’re up against. And that makes a course correction possible!
Expanding the definition:
4. Opposing or endangering life (reverse reading: LIVE<>EVIL)
