Mattias Desmet wrote about "bullshit jobs," the title of a book by David Graeber. From a random sample of people, asked whether they thought their jobs made a meaningful contribution to society, 37% said no and 13% were unsure. I wonder how many women, who feel that way about their paid employment, still think what they are doing is more important than raising children.

It’s a worthy question, although I prefer a world where comparisons are less and honored choices are more.

No one should stay home and focus on raising their children if doing so is going to cause them to feel resentful or miserable or unhappy.

Pretty much, every single decision we make as a parent, from home birth to hospital birth or home school to government school or putting the kids in childcare versus raising them primarily ourselves, each person needs to take the time to know themselves well enough to know which is the best option for them because children need healthy parents.

And one person’s healthy is not the same as another person’s healthy. Right?

Great article, truth bombs by the bushel. I don't have go-to a brownie recipe, but my kid does.

I love reading this. From a mom who works full-time on the fringes hours of the day and all day on weekends, so that I can get to spend time with my kid.

So long as we have the freedom to acknowledge what it is that we want most, most of us can find a way to achieve our best life. Just imagine how many people live their whole lives doing what they think other people will approve of and never listening to their own inner voice? And, so glad you enjoyed the read…now, how about those brownies! 🤣

For any and all classical music lovers reading this blog, I'd like to recommend this brilliant newsletter called The Podium, by a music insider who writes under the pen name Don Baton.

It's beautifully written, thoughtful, and intensely relevant to contemporary American culture and society.
